Privacy Policy
Last updated 4 October 2026
folie has no accounts, no servers of its own and no analytics in the app. Your captures are files on your Mac, and the maker of folie never receives them.
This page says exactly what folie keeps, where it sits, and every moment anything leaves your Mac.
The short version
- Your captures and their index live in one folder on your Mac. We have no copy.
- There is no account and no sign in. The app has no analytics and no tracking.
- When you take a capture, folie sends a smaller copy of the image to the model you chose, using your key. It goes to that provider, not to us.
- Pick a model running on your own Mac and nothing leaves at all.
- The browser extension only talks to the folie app on your own Mac.
- Checking a license key talks to Lemon Squeezy, who also handle payment.
- This website uses PostHog analytics, without cookies, to count page views and clicks.
Who is responsible
"We" means the maker of folie, an independent developer working alone. Contact details are at the bottom of this page.
What folie stores on your Mac
Everything folie keeps lives in one folder on your own disk:
~/Library/Application Support/Folie/
Inside it are your captures as PNG files, and one SQLite file that indexes them. For each capture the index holds the address and title of the page it came from, the name and labels the model gave it, the font names, the colors, your tags and notes, and any text read off the image.
That text is read on your Mac by Apple's Vision framework. It runs on the device and sends nothing anywhere.
A few small things live in the macOS Keychain instead: your API keys, your license activation, and the date your trial started. folie's settings are kept in the usual macOS preferences file.
None of this is sent to us. We have no server for it to go to.
What leaves your Mac when you take a capture
To name and label a capture, folie asks a model. You choose which one in Settings, and there is no fallback to anything else.
At the moment you save a capture, folie sends to that model:
- a downscaled JPEG copy of the capture, never the full PNG;
- the title of the page it came from;
- the font names the browser extension reported, if you use it.
It never sends your library or the index. Nothing is sent when you are not capturing.
If you choose Claude, this goes to Anthropic's API, using your own Anthropic API key. It is your account doing it, and Anthropic's own terms and privacy policy govern what they do with it.
If you choose your own endpoint, this goes to the OpenAI-compatible address you typed in. If that is a model on your own Mac, such as Ollama, nothing leaves your Mac. If it is a hosted service, it goes to that service, under its own terms and privacy policy.
In both cases the image goes from your Mac straight to the provider you picked. The maker of folie never receives it, never sees it and has no way to.
Your API keys
Keys are stored in the macOS Keychain, as two separate items: one for Anthropic and one for your own endpoint. They are never written to the index or to a plain file.
A key is sent only to the endpoint it belongs to, and only over an encrypted connection or to your own Mac. If the address is neither, folie refuses to send the key.
We never receive your keys.
The browser extension
The Chrome extension is optional. It lets folie know the real typefaces on a page instead of guessing them from the image.
On pages you visit, it reads which font families the page uses. It sends the font names, with the page address and title, to the folie app on your own Mac at 127.0.0.1:7717, along with a private token so the app knows the report is from your extension. That address is your own Mac. The report never crosses a network.
The extension has permission to reach that one local address and nothing else. It sends nothing to us or to any other server. folie keeps only the latest report, and uses it only when it matches the page you captured.
Without the extension, folie guesses fonts from the image and marks them as a guess.
The permissions macOS asks for
Screen Recording. macOS requires it for any screenshot. folie reads the screen only when you start a capture, and only the region you select.
Apple Events. This lets folie read the address of the browser tab you are capturing, so a capture knows where it came from. It is used at that moment only.
Neither runs in the background. Nothing is recorded between captures.
Buying folie and checking your license
Lemon Squeezy is the Merchant of Record. They run the checkout, take payment, handle tax, send your receipt and license key, and process refunds. What you give them at checkout, such as your name, email address, billing country and payment details, is collected by them under their own privacy policy.
As the maker of folie, we can see the order details Lemon Squeezy shows its sellers, such as your name, email address, country and what you bought. We use them only to answer support and refund requests and to sort out license problems. We never see your card number.
When you activate a key, folie sends Lemon Squeezy the key and an instance name, which is your Mac's name as set in System Settings. Lemon Squeezy replies with the activation, which folie saves in your Keychain. After that, folie checks the license with Lemon Squeezy about once a week. No capture, file or library data goes with any of these calls.
Deactivating a Mac in folie's settings tells Lemon Squeezy to free that slot.
This website
This site is a set of static pages with no forms. It sets no cookies and stores nothing in your browser.
It is hosted on Netlify. Like any web host, Netlify keeps standard server logs, such as your IP address, browser, the page requested and the time, under its own privacy policy. We do not use them to identify or track you.
Two things are loaded from other servers, so your browser asks those hosts directly and they can see your IP address and browser:
- Google Fonts, for the site's typefaces, on every page.
- jsDelivr, for a small smooth scrolling script called Lenis, on the home page only.
Analytics. The website, not the app, uses PostHog to understand how the site is used. The PostHog script is loaded from PostHog's servers in the United States, and the data is stored there. It records:
- the pages you view and when you leave them;
- the links and buttons you click;
- page performance measurements (web vitals);
- the technical details that come with any request, such as your IP address, browser, device type and the page that sent you.
It is set up to run without cookies or local storage. It keeps its state in memory only, so it forgets you when you close the tab and cannot recognize you on a later visit. It builds no profile of you, and it does not record your screen or sessions. We use it only to see which pages are read and where people click, and PostHog's privacy policy applies to what it processes.
Buying folie happens on Lemon Squeezy's checkout pages, covered above.
No selling, no ads
The app has no analytics. The website's analytics are the cookieless PostHog setup described above, and nothing else. We do not sell or rent your information, we do not share it for advertising, and we do not advertise to you.
Deleting your data
Because there is no account and no server, deleting your data means deleting the folder named above: ~/Library/Application Support/Folie/. Delete the app too if you are done with it. You can remove your API keys from Keychain Access, or from folie's settings before you delete it.
For order details held by Lemon Squeezy, or by us as their seller, write to the address below and we will delete what we can and ask Lemon Squeezy to do the same. Some records, like invoices, may have to be kept for tax reasons.
Data sent to Anthropic or to a hosted endpoint is held under that provider's policy. Ask them directly.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, or to object to how it is used. The personal information we can hold is the order details and the website analytics described above. Write to us and we will answer.
Children
folie is a tool for designers and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this policy
If what folie sends or stores changes, this page changes with it and the date at the top moves. If a change means more leaves your Mac than before, it will be said plainly here.
